Happy Valentin's Day - Feb. 14

As you can see on the list of Notable Days, there are many days in May that have special significance.

Mother’s Day is one of the most celebrated. It was first observed in 1908 in the United States and is always the second Sunday in May, which is May 13 this year. It has become one of the biggest days for long-distance telephone calls, sale of flowers, greeting cards, etc. Church going also increases on this day and many worshippers celebrate the day by wearing carnations, colored if the mother is living and white if she is deceased.

Memorial Day is also a day of remembrance as it honors all who gave their lives in past wars. Though you realize that Monday, May 28 will be a solemn day of remembering, the three-day break from work offers two days before Memorial Day when you can rest, have a picnic or generally relax with the friends and family.

Other days in May which are not as celebrated are as follows:

  • May 1, 1941 The first United States Series E Savings Bond was issued.
  • May 1, 1931 New York City¹s Empire State Building opened.
  • May 6, 1937 The German Airship Hindenburg caught fire and exploded while landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey.
  • May 15-16, 1963 Gemini Astronaut Gordon Cooper orbited the Earth twenty-two times.
  • May 16, 1866 Issuance of the first nickel coin was authorized by Congress.
  • May 21, 1881 Clara Barton founded The American Red Cross.
  • May 26, 1927 Ford Motor Company ceased production of the Model T automobile.
  • May 30, 1922 The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated.
  • In May 1889, The Eiffel Tower opened and became the tallest structure in the world, a title it retained for 41 years. It is 324 meters tall or 1,063 feet. It took two years and 300 workers to build it.
  • For the first time in 18 years, a solar eclipse will be visible from North America, as the moon moves between the sun and the earth on May 20, 2012. The point of greatest eclipse will be deep in the Pacific, but Americans from Oregon to Reno, NV, to Albuquerque, NM, will get a view of the solar show for at least a minute or two. This will be an annular eclipse, so the sun will not appear to be completely blocked out, as is true in a total eclipse. Instead, viewers will see a ring of the sun around the dark outline of the moon.
